Story behind the song
This is a song that doesn't shout it whispers. And what it says is both painful and beautiful. Send in the Clowns was written by Stephen Sondheim in 1973 for the musical A Little Night Music, but it has long since taken on a life of its own outside the theater stage. Judy Collins made it famous, Frank Sinatra and Barbra Streisand have sung it but it is the feeling in the lyrics that makes it timeless. It is about the irony of life about realizing too late what you really wanted. About love that slips away, and the questions we are left with: Why now? Why not then? Why us? And the title Send in the Clowns is not about clowns with red noses, but about the absurdities of life. When everything goes wrong, it is almost as if you are waiting for someone to come and make it all into a performance because it feels unreal.
